Pollica
Pollica lies inland. St.Francis Friary is worthy to be visited with its
wonderful cloister that spurs the mind to reflection and peace. It is
open from 9:00 to 12:00 and from 16:00 to 22:00.
You should also visit the St.Nicholas church, where every day at
17:00 Mass is celebrated, and the well-kept castle of the Capano Princes
of St. Severino Barony. It will soon be the office of the Town Council
and of the "International Committee for the study of Mediterrean Diet".
Acciaroli
Acciaroli is surrounded by sweet hills that are covered with the
typical mediterrean bush.
In the beginning the town's name was "Aczarùlo" (the first
mention dates back to 1116). This name cames from the greek word "zale"
which means "sea storm". It is preceded with an "a" (that
in greek language is privative), and it indicates the characteristic meaning
of Acciaroli: "The absence of sea storms". You have to visit
the church of Our Lady of the Annunciation, the Saracen towers and the
wonderful beaches.
Cannicchio
The place-name "Cannicchio" comes from Greek word "kanna" which
means reed and from "ìkrion" which means platform; therefore
"reed platform". People say that in the past the young married
couples spent the first days of their marriage in a hut with a reed ground
built on a tree. The story is based on the fact that in ancient times
the houses were single rooms, so the young married couples went into these
huts to find a bit of privacy while awaiting the building of their own
house. You should visit the church.
Pioppi
Pioppi is very near to Acciaroli. It is known for the museum of the sea in Vinciprova's Castle. The museum is open from 9:30 to 12:30 and from 15:00 to 19:00 everyday except Tuesday. (Currently closed for restorations)
