| Velia (Elea)
Velia (Elea) was one of the more important cities in Southern Italy during
the Greek Age. It is an important archeological destination. The excavations
have brought to light a big temple of the 4th Century B.C., as well as
other buildings. In the plain archeoligists have brought to light the
Agora' (a Greek meeting-place) and the city walls of the 4th Century B.C..
One of the most extraordinary finds is the monumental arch "Porta Rosa"
that has been perfectly preserved.
Elea's school, founded in 540 b.C. by Parmenides, Zeno and Xenophanes, was a school of philosophy and democracy.
In this school were developed and put into practice the first democratic
constitutions which the world has often admired, sometimes for good, and
sometimes for bad.
Xenophanes defined "God is absolute unity, so that He is what there
is of power, He can be nothing else but one, eternal and not begot". |
Palinuro
Palinuro
is known for its caves. The "Azure Cave" is the greatest. Its name comes
from the incredible effect of the sunlight reflecting through the sea
which runs into the cave for 70 meters. The azure shines from the sea
bottom and sheds light into the vault with soft colours. |
Castellabate
Castellabate. In 1123 the fourth Abbot of Cava founded on a hill a typical
village simply named "Castello dell'Abate". It was accessable from
three doors: Sea door, Square door and Knight door. Besides the medieval
village you should also visit the Papal Basilica.

Licosa
Licosa with its lighthouse is the old headland where the Siren
Leucosia sank ships at the goddess Venus's will. A myth tells that "The
fine Leucosiana Siren was petrified from astute and terrible Ulysses".
From the sea surface you can see underwater ruins. |
Ortodonico Cilento
Ortodonico Cilento (Montecorice commune) it is worth visiting the Baronal
Palace of "de Vergas". It was residence of the philosopher Gian
Battista Vico, who from 1686 to 1695 studied in the rich library of
Rocca Marquis. Don't miss the stately Medieval Tower and the Museum.

Casalvelino. The tradition relates that here was discovered the Holy Body
of St. Matthew the Evangelist (the Patron of Salerno). His clothes were
to be transferred to Rome by Gavino, who took them to Casalicchio (Casalvelino)
where they stayed forgotten until an old man appeared in a vision to the
pious Pelagia from Paestum. Then the clothes were taken to Capaccio
and then to the Cathedral in Salerno |
Rocca Cilento
Rocca Cilento is famous for its Medieval Castle that was first the landmark
for Cilento's Baronage, and then for the Universitas Cilenti, the association
of the nobility.

Agnone
Agnone is a small sea village with a hilly hinterland rich with
woods and pine forests. Toward Acciaroli there is the fishiest coast of
the area: the estate "Licerra" and the "Shallow of Vatolla"
rich with rocks and gorges. |
